Each year the federal government conducts national surveys to access the health status of the nation. The information gathered from these surveys are used to see trends and identify areas where the public needs to be educated about important health concerns.
The organization that is responsible for these studies is called the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Below you will find a list that came from one of their recent studies, as you look it over I will leave it to you to draw your own conclusion concerning the state of the nation’s health.
1 out of 4 Adults smokes
1 out of 3 Adults has high blood pressure
1 out of 3 Adults has high blood cholesterol
2 out of 3 Adults are overweight or obese
3 out of 4 Adults fail to get adequate exercise
4 out of 5 Adults need to significantly improve their diets
One good thing is that over the past 40 years, fewer people have taken up smoking, due to the anti smoking regulations and wide spread campaign against smoking. Unfortunately, the high levels of blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and participation in some sort of regular exercise program, has remained relativity unchanged.
This is the saddest bit of information; over the same time period, the number of overweight American children has Quadrupled- almost 25% of all grade school Children are overweight today. The health threats posed by being overweight as a child can be long-lasting. Children and adolescents who are overweight are at risk for becoming overweight adults.
Overweight adults face many health problems due to their excessive weight, such as decreased productivity, social stigma, high health care costs, and premature death. In addition, overweight adults are at increased risk for type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, stroke, respiratory problems, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and some types of cancer. Most of which can be prevented by getting their bodies back into an alkaline state through healthy diet and exercise.
Studies suggest that excessive belly fat is a major concern. The abdominal and visceral fat (found surrounding the internal organs) has been more closely linked with diseases than has general body fat.Waist circumference may therefore be a better predictor of being unhealthily overweight than body mass index, which is a ratio of height and weight.
Taking your Health Seriously
